Happy Equinox
Hello from Tomorro Farm,
90 degrees in March isn’t normal… right? And just like that, it’s officially spring. Happy equinox!
We’ve definitely felt a surge of spring energy these past few days - everything is growing so fast. Honestly, that might be the best slug control we’ve got… growth faster than they can munch.
Are you a bevear believer?
Jake and I recently attended a BDA workshop (we think the first one in our county!) put on by the Resource Conservation District and a friend. It was held at Walters Creek (just behind the gun range near the farm for those local) which is actually a really similar system to our own tributary creek.
A BDA (Beaver Dam Analog) is a structure made from natural materials that mimics what beavers do: slowing, spreading, and filtering water. They help restore streams, raise the water table, and even heal erosion like headcuts. For the workshop, we built ours using coyote brush and mud - just like the real engineers do!
We’re hoping to secure funding by fall to install our own system of BDAs on the farm. It would be a huge step toward supporting our trees, our water, and the overall health of the land. With the Beaver Festival coming up here in SLO, you can really feel the excitement building around watershed restoration in our county.
WOMEN IN RANCHING
I (Jesse) had the honor of attending the Women in Ranching Confluence at Paicines Ranch. The ranch (7,000 acres) is a California epicenter for regenerative grazing with sheep especially. It’s also a place that already feels like home - Jake used to work there, so we always end up reconnecting with old friends when we visit. Our good friend, Janet, a paicines neighbor, hosted Jake and I for the weekend, and we got to bottle feed her 2 day old goats! Don’t worry, Jake had good company while I was at the women only events.
The confluence (a boujee conference) brought together 80 women ranchers and was packed with conversations, workshops, and speakers. Topics ranged from small-scale, U.S.-produced leather to Audubon certification, to GPS “no-fence” systems for cattle, to succession planning.
But honestly, one of the most meaningful parts was the space itself - being in a room of women navigating an already tough, male-dominated industry. There was something really grounding and relieving about feeling understood without needing to explain anything. I’m super grateful to the friend that invited me to go with her.
Surround yourself with people who are doing crazier things than you, and your dreams won’t seem so crazy!
