THE COUNTDOWN TO MARKET IS ON! (THE SLUGS ARE TOO)
HELLO FROM TOMORRO FARM,
The countdown is on. We’ve officially reached the point in the crop plan where it’s no longer cover crop out there. It’s happening. Bed by bed, now and over the next few weeks, everything shifts into our cash crops.
One neighbor walking by recently said, “Your garden changes complexion every time I pass.” A magical statement that I’m holding on to. And it about sums it up.
BASICALLY THAT ONE SLUG SCENE FROM HARRY POTTER.
Our first transplants are officially in the ground: lettuce mix, our radicchio blend, kale and chard for bunching, plus broccoli and cauliflower. We also direct seeded our first beds of carrots, mini daikons, watermelon radish, cilantro, dill, and spinach. And we finally got Plot 4 squared away with its spring cover crop!
It was high highs. And then… slugs.
Coming from hot, dry Redding, Jake and I were not prepared for their appetite. The munching capacity is honestly impressive. We’ve been heading out almost every evening to hand-pick them off the lettuce. I took photos as proof for the newsletter because I figured ya’ll would appreciate the behind-the-scenes action shots.
It’s been slightly horrifying. Also strangely fun. Night slug patrol has turned into an unexpected bonding ritual. So neighbors, if you see two headlights pointed at our lettuce beds between 7–9 pm… now you know.
CURRENT FARM NEEDS
Today we made a giant to do list titled “before farmers market.” A big part of it is gathering some of the physical pieces we’ll need. In a perfect world, maybe some of these are already sitting unused in someone’s garage or shed.
We love sourcing secondhand whenever we can. No pressure at all, but if you have something you’d like to pass along or sell, we’d be grateful.
Here’s what we’re looking for:
– Large stainless steel sink (1 or 2 compartment)
– Market booth tent and tent weights
– Stainless steel tables
– Folding tables (Costco style)
– Wicker baskets, any size
– Cute patterned fabric for tablecloth
– Wooden boxes for display (vintage or cute and simple)
– Coolers
– Cash box
– Small hand calculators
– Upright fridge or chest freezer
– Chalkboard signs or A-frame signs
And as always, we gladly take clean food scraps for compost and cardboard for mulch. Let us know if anything rings a bell & thanks for following along through the early days.
Your farmers,
Jake and Jesse :)
