We Planted A Hedgerow!
It’s been the busiest month of my life, and we’re not even in June yet. I keep saying, “I’m tired but I feel alive!”
A HUGE SUCCESS
We had our first volunteer event and it went effortlessly, thanks to you showing up ready to shovel, plant, water, laugh, and help. We say the phrase “community supported agriculture” a lot, and Saturday I felt it. Together we planted more than 250 native trees, shrubs, grasses, and flowers along the east side of our garden. Every plant was intentionally chosen to support local pollinators, with blooms throughout the year. We planted narrow leaf milkweed because we are in critical monarch habitat, along with dozens of other species that will provide shelter for beneficial insects, support natural pest management, and create a beautiful living border of the farm for years to come.
The humans at the San Luis Obispo Coastal Resource Conservation District went so far beyond their jobs in helping us secure funding, coordinate plants, and organize our hedgerow planting. They deserve a special shoutout and a day off! I’m still blown away by the support they showed, not just for us as farmers, but for the land itself. Stewardship can look so many different ways, and for their stewardship, we are so grateful!
Thank you to everyone who showed up to support and become part of this little farm with us. It means more than we can say. 💛
OTHER HAPPENINGS AT TOMORRO
Some fun actives we got to the last few days:
Basils are planted and finally in the ground, they smelled amazing! We are growing Italian (Genovese basil), thai basil and tulsi (holy) basil! So excited to introduce you all to Tulsi Basil if you’ve never had it. Jake and I discovered it at the last farm we worked at and now it’s not summer without tulsi infused water.
We got to visit a seed breeder in Nipomo (Bill Waycott, a local legend) and see new varieties of artisian lettuce, a true honor to be recognized as farmers enough to pick out our varieties we want to grow! Look forward to seeing some awesome new lettuces on our market table!
Attended an RCD hosted event on cover cropping in the central coast! Super eye opening to hear from farmers, both organic and conventional on their cover cropping systems.
Getting ready to welcome cattle back on the property, more on that next week!
Had our second CSA week with a successful harvest and pick up!
Eating our first “summer crop” out of the garden: zucchini!
VEGETABLE HIGHLIGHT: ICEBERG LETTUCE
Iceberg often gets overlooked, but honestly, there’s a reason it has stuck around forever. It’s crisp, refreshing, juicy, and holds up beautifully in all kinds of dishes.
A few favorite ways to use it:
• Layered onto burgers or sandwiches for the perfect crunch
• Used for lettuce wraps to deliver any type of seasoned protein, peanut sauce? sweet thai? spicy mayo? yes yes yes
• Taco night base instead of tortillas or chopped on nachos (for some reason SO GOOD)
• Caesar salad (we had this last night!)
• Thinly sliced into a rice bowl for a little freshness and texture
Iceberg also keeps surprisingly well in the fridge! We have a lot of it right now and then it’ll be gone, so get it now or never!
