WHAT A WEEK: 1,600 PLANTS + FIRST MARKET
One year ago today, Jake and I drove our U-Haul down to SLO from Red Bluff with the last of our things. It gives me so much joy to think about how much has happened since then - the incredible people we’ve met, the farmers we’ve connected with, and the future we’ve stepped into.
Its some kind of magic that, exactly one year later, we found ourselves at our very first farmers market!
SUMMER CROPS IN THE GROUND!
Last week was a hell of a week.
On the farm, Jake and I planted the final six beds of the garden with tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. The anticipation for summer is high as we think about all the cherry tomatoes and heirlooms now in the ground.
Because these plants start small, we’re able to maximize space by side-planting additional crops in those same beds. In total, we put in about 1,600 starts. It’s pretty incredible how much food you can grow on a small footprint - we’re currently farming just a quarter acre.
With relay cropping (like seeding cucumbers while lettuce is still in the ground) and intercropping (like planting radicchio alongside tomatoes), the space stretches even further. Our beds are also wider than standard, 48 inches instead of 30, which can make certain tasks more challenging, but ultimately means more production and fewer pathways to maintain. It’s a big part of why a quarter acre can feel like so much.
OUR FIRST FARMERS’ MARKET
I’m really proud of us for getting everything in the ground while keeping up with harvests. We also attended our first Thursday farmers market in Morro Bay. We were greeted with so many warm welcomes and gratitude for our organic certification.
At our last farm, the market was always the highlight of the week - a chance to connect, to see people enjoy the food, to feel that full-circle moment where the hard work lands somewhere meaningful. We’re excited to build that here.
We’re still figuring out what sales channels make the most sense with markets, wholesale, schools, CSA, but trying to stay intentional while remembering this is a process. Morro Bay Thursdays is our first go.
WHERE TO FIND US THIS WEEK!
The Avocado Shack has been stocking our produce! You can find our mellow lettuce mix, spinach, herbs, and more! The shack is a wonderful produce store off of main in morro, with amazing local avocados along with other local goodies like granola, cheeses, berries, citrus and more! You can follow them on instagram for good sales too!
We’ll also be back at the Morro Bay Thursday Market with a fresh harvest! Check out our vegetable forecast for whats available this week :)
We feeling all the momentum and excitement around the farm right now, and we’re deeply grateful for the support. Thanks for being part of this wild adventure.
Your farmers,
Jake & Jesse :)
