Notes from the Road (Farm Note #3)

KEEPING IT SHORT AND SWEET

We’ve been out of town spending time with Jake’s family and soaking up a much-appreciated mental break from planning. It’s been full of good food, old recipe books at grandma’s, puzzles and books, time with old friends, runs and waves, and soon, a quick hop to Colorado for our annual dose of snowy nordic skiing. We’ll be back on the farm before we know it!

We missed slo’s rain. Grateful for friends and neighbors keeping an eye on the place for us to make sure nothing blew away. All is well. Check out this epic rainbow our neighbor spotted!

While traveling, we visited a San Diego farmers market — think SLO’s Thursday night market energy, but in the morning and squeezed into a high school parking lot. Once we found the produce section, we picked up some local veggies from San Diego growers. I grabbed a bunch of Hakarei turnips (a juicy, mild snacking turnip), and another shopper asked what they were. I told her, “a turnip you can eat like an apple.” She took my word for it, shared the claim with the cashier, and gave me a look as if to test it. Luckily, the farmers agreed. They’re not quite apple-sweet, but if any vegetable comes close, it’s this one. We’re excited to grow them at Tomorro Farm.

We also found some Okinawa sweet potatoes, white raspberries, sprouting cauliflower, a new variety of dates, some huge kohlrabi and some yummy salad greens! Did you do any of your holiday shopping at the farmers’ market? What treasures did you find?

Wishing you a happy new year. Talk soon!

Your farmers,

Jake and Jesse :)
